Tay Roc defeats Gunpowder Patt

Recap: From We Go Hard, after getting Chef Trez recently, WGH’s Gunpowder Patt gets an even bigger dawg in Tay Roc for 3 rounds in Brooklyn. And frankly speaking, this battle was a little underwhelming as no disrespect to GP, but considering Roc’s long-held top tier status in battle rap, you’d be more inclined to see his WGH debut against the likes of an always competitive Ish Mula or fellow gun bar enthusiast Dougy. Then too is the fact that while GP is well-known for his eager aggression and street wit during battles, all them bumps and touches he was giving Roc in the opening rounds were really being extra and seemingly making it more about showmanship than trying to actually win the battle (until round 3 anyway, when Patt put it together performance and bar-wise to force a debatable there). That said Roc, even while not quite on his A-game throughout, still scored with more than enough rich gun lines, gritty punchlines and solid name flips to take rounds 1 and 2 for the win.

Verdict: Tay Roc (W) 2-1

Favorite line: Tay Roc – “Incredible, you ain’t on my pedestal, unacceptable, his battle is proof that I be making myself too accessible, but I’ll put you on a shirt than buy one if they sell a few, then save it like the one’s like yours, I got collectibles!”

Chef Trez defeats Gunpowder Patt

Recap: Who doesn’t love a dope style clash? And this 3-rounder from We Go Hard was ceratinly that as Chef Trez with ominous barrel of piercing gun bars, sublime off-the-dome heat and gritty punchlines faces off against the aggressive, personal-lit, witty and entertaining polemics of Gunpowder Patt. A close one throughout, despite a pretty solid and hard-hitting opening round from Trez (that was spoiled a lit bit due to Chef taking a bit too long to land the punch), Patt’s colorful angles, humorous stylings and clever/steely punchlines edges Gunpowder the round. And then the Chef got to cooking. Landing a boatload of fly name flips and a handful of fierce rebuttals to go along with a gang of raucous punches/gun bars, Trez would do just enough to edge round 2 over an opponent who cane with it when it it came ill braggadocius lines, more crazy wit and fiery street anthems. Tied going into the 3rd in front of a rocking WGH crowd, even while dialing back a bit on the rebuts, Trez would still score at will via a rich palette of robust punchlines, some hitting personals and well-finessed wordplay to take the 3rd and get the win over a G.P. who while still compettiive, just seemed to run out of steam when it came to landing as many haymakers as he did in the previous rounds.

Verdict: Chef Trez (W) 2-1

Favorite line: Chef Trez – “Catch steel from Chef, you know what’ll happen at point blank if I squeeze bitch?, I’ll get blood on my gun, marinera falling off a chopper…it’s a cheese stick!”

Squeako defeats Gunpowder Patt

Recap: Against a lyrically topsy-turvy opponent with a bit of an identity crisis (not sure sometimes if Gunpowder Patt wants to be a bullish Math Hoffa or a swagger-lit Goodz or perhaps both), an unusually irked Squeako has a mostly easy time of it, using some stinging name flips, boastful shiners and piercing punchlines to easily take rounds 1 plus 3 (call the 2nd debatable) and get the win in this One Off 3-rounder from URL.

Verdict: Squeako (W) 2-1

Favorite line: Squeako – “All you gonna talk about is how I loss to Your Honor….bitch I took a plea!”

Gunpowder Patt defeats Burke Bucs

Recap: Close one here between Gunpowder Patt and Burke Bucs. But after a very subpar showing in his last battle versus Your Honor, Patt gets back in his bag of witty punches/schemes, mocking personals, fiery schemes and bullish performance bars to edge the only round that was decisive: the 2nd (between a debatable 1st and 3rd) against a Bucs who was gritty, heat-ready and even displayed some wit throughout, but couldn’t quite match his opponent’s potency in the middle round.

Verdict: Gunpowder Patt (W) 2-1

Favorite line: Gunpowder Patt – “Dome shot him, I’ll cave in his whole noggin’, trigger-finger have Roc spinning like a Globetrotter!”

Gunpowder Patt defeats Don Marino

Recap: A fire, haymaker-drenched, Mexican-lit and (“Paranormal activity, I had lay powder down so you can see my next step!”) punch-heavy 2nd round from Don Marino serves as the best round of this PG battle versus Gunpowder Patt. But one too many repeated themes and a surprising 1st round choke from Marino along with GP’s witty(“You look like you got bullied in class all ya life…nigga, you was home-schooled!”) musings, solid personals and fiery 4-bar set-up’s/fierce schemes in the 1st and 3rd rounds gives the We Go Hard grad an earnest win.

Verdict: Gunpowder Patt (W) 2-1

Favorite line: Gunpowder Patt – “Drug bars, y’all know that saying, ‘Step on a crack, break ya mama back’?, yeah I see that shit real clear, in the trap, so much crack getting stepped on my mom in a wheelchair!”

Gunpowder Patt defeats Skates

Recap: It’s funny how often performance-leaning battle rappers get conflated with not having quality bars. As is the case for this PG matchup here with so many in the comments section concluding that Gunpowder Patt lost this battle to Skates because the latter had bars and Patt? Well, he’s nothing but a comedian. Like darts such as “Nigga’s wanna live like the movie till they lose a child…everybody wanna be Ace until the deuce is wild!” and “Bring me two extra quarters, I’ll bring you back double…overtime!” weren’t high-grade caliber. Of course, anyone who’s witnessed Skates perform before this battle, knows that he comes well-equipped with (“This is Chinese alchemy, ‘cuz discovering Gunpowder was an accident!”) gritty, sublime, hardbody bars and schemes for days. And a fiery, (“Gunpowder fuck around he gonna be on the dirt shaking, EMT saying ‘GP are you with me’ like Kirk Franklin!”) consistently on-point 2nd round here, proved that. But thanks, yes in part to a better overall performance, a more versatile palette, lofty/relatable bars that hit and Skates penchant for pedestrian bars to segue between angles, the consensus here is Gunpowder Patt taking rounds 1 and 3 for the win.

Verdict: Gunpowder Patt (W) 2-1

Favorite line: Gunpowder Patt – “I don’t like Uber Pool ‘cuz I might get in a car with a nigga that I got beef with!”
