Cortez defeats Zay Smoove

Recap: From GOTG, a pretty standard 1-rounder between Cortez and Zay Smoove sees the two deliver resident/aggressive bars in the form of hardbody street darts, feelgood gun bars, flexing mayhem and boastful punches with a few personals here and there to prove that the two did do some research on each other before the battle. That said, with much less reaches than his opponent, more intricacy to his bars and some gutsy trap talk to attest to a slightly more versatile plate, it’s Cortez who handily gets the win.

Verdict: Cortez (W) 1-0

Favorite line: Cortez – “The twin 40’s smoking together ain’t peer pressure!”

B. Magic defeats Zay Smoove

Recap: B. Magic’s first appearance on GOTG finds him barely breaking a sweat as the St. Louis vet uses a steady barrage of spitfire punchlines and flexing wordplay/similes/name flips to handily beat back an earnest, but overmatched Zay Smoove.

Verdict: B. Magic (W) 1-0

Favorite line: B. Magic – “.9 clapper, this here spine cracker, bring a quarterback ain’t no safety on this linebacker, these two arms will raise your roof like a contractor!”

Chef Trez defeats Zay Smoove

Recap: The irony of Zay Smoove talking up Chef Trez’s rebuttal game so much in round 1 and Trez only utilizing one or two the entire battle shouldn’t be lost here. As in this 3-rounder from GOTG, Trez puts aside the off-the-dome zingers and instead dishes a steady barrage of fiery gun bars, festive name flips, graphic mayhem and rich set-ups/punchlines to, despite a solid showing from his sometimes longwinded opponent, earn the 30.

Verdict: Chef Trez (W) 3-0

Favorite line: Chef Trez – “They thought I was only a shooter when I had the dreds, but I’m cut for whatever [takes off hoody] you see I’m still willing to fade with you!”

Zay Smoove defeats Bangz

Recap: If they haven’t battled already, would love to two freestyle heads, AR-16 and Bangz go at it some day. That said, in this 1-rounder from GOTG, the exclusive off-the-dome heat from Bangz scores with banging results here and there. But one too many subpar punches and a raucous Zay Smoove never taking his foot off the pedal when it came to handbody punches, leaves the big man from Queens, NY, with the win.

Verdict: Zay Smoove (W) 1-0

Favorite line: Zay Smoove – “Rusty kicks, dead stock, no silencer, he got stuck with a ring…wedlock!”

Zay Smoove defeats Cali Smoov

Recap: All the battle rappers with ‘Smoov’ in their names will have to run into each other eventually. But in the meantime credit to Dre Dennis, Zay Smoove and Cali Smoov coming together in ATL and doing it first here in this 1-rounder from GOTG that the gun bar/mayhem-lit and more consistently hard-hitting Zay wins over an opponent who was much nicer with the personals than the righteous talk.

Verdict: Zay Smoov (W) 1-0

Favorite line: Zay Smoov – “I blast the tools right with a 3:15 on the dot…like after school fights!”

Zay Smoove and Jakkboy Maine [DEBATABLE]

Recap: One-rounder from GOTG sees the ever-unorthodox Jakkboy Maine comes through with a fly rebuttal, some solid name flips and whimsical wordplay during his turn. Yet, while he did rap nearly twice as long as his opponent, a consistently gritty, name flip/personal-savvy and steadier flowing Zay Smoove does manage to stoke enough heat to make this a draw.

Verdict: Debatable

Favorite line: Zay Smoove – “We wanna know how God let you survive lupus just to cause the culture cancer!”

Lu Castro defeats Zay Smoove

Recap: From Gates of the Garden, an always brazen Zap Smoove had some hot lines. But a couple of dry spots by Smoove along with a more nifty with the wordplay, set-up/mayhem-lit, bullish with the schemes and punch-heavy Lu Castro gets the win in this fiery 1-rounder.

Verdict: Lu Castro (W) 1-0

Favorite line: Lu Castro – “Quick question, where you get all this heart from to keep getting back up? go down Smoove [smooth]!, Henny Privilege!”

Nu Jerzey Twork defeats Zay Smoove

Recap: The video of this GOTG 1-rounder between Nu Jerzey Twork and Zay Smoove seems to cut Smoove’s round short, but since it says ‘Full Battle’ in the title we’ll count it as a win for Twork who despite misleading heads on Cee-Lo changing his name to ‘Gnarls Barkley’ (that was really just the name of the band Cee-Lo joined), still delivered more than enough utter mayhem and stinging personals/name flips to beat back a pretty pedestrian turn by his opponent.

Verdict: Nu Jerzey Twork (W) 1-0

Favorite line: Nu Jerzey Twork – “You came to the Gates and left the Trap cold turkey, fuck I look like, Dre?, I ain’t showing you No Mercy!”

Burke Bucs defeats Zay Smoove

Recap: Providing glistening commentary on the consequences for all those who stand in the way of his perpetual mayhem, but also dishing some feisty punchlines and piercing name flips along the way, a way more consistently nice Burke Bucs has an easy time beating back the overall less potent bars from Zay Smoove in this 1-rounder from GOTG.

Verdict: Burke Bucs (W) 1-0

Favorite line: Burke Bucs – “Next battle you better work out, I’m at his neck like a crew sweater, he Elroy and I’m George, trying to teach my son how to levitate in this new era!

Holmzie Da God defeats Zay Smoove

Recap: Holmzie Da God’s more potent personals, righteous gun bars, fiery schemes and stifling mayhem in enough to edge a Soldi overall, but not as consistent Zay Smoove in this 1-rounder from GOTG.

Verdict: Holmzie Da God (W) 1-0

Favorite line: Holmzie Da God – “This big bitch worthless with the Heat..he Greg Oden!”

Chess defeats Zay Smoove

Recap: The irony of Chess still being so young, but having such long-standing employment in the game that he can give up-n-comers a shot isn’t lost here as he faces off with relative newbie Zay Smoove in this 1-rounder from Gates of the Garden. And while going overboard on the mayhem and rapping almost twice as long as his opponent, Smoove makes the most of his shot with a handful of ringing haymakers and hitting personals that will probably get him some views from the higher-ups in battle rap. Still, once again proving that his long battle with choking is complete, during his turn Chess offers up a clean and turn of fiery name flips, stunted wordplay and jaunty punchlines that with more than enough haymakers mixed in, easily beats back Zay Smoove’s aggressive, but oft-porous heat.

Verdict: Chess (W) 1-0

Favorite line: Chess – “I did premeditate stabbing this nigga…let’s just say I STUCK to the plan!”

Bill Collector defeats Zay Smoove

Recap: Maybe one day somebody will be kind enough to come up with a percentage on how many times ‘Hitman’s little brother!’ ShowOut was mentioned in a Bill Collector battle since their incident some years back. That said, in this 1-rounder from GOTG, a BC equipped with a gang of raucous gun bars, fiery/witty personals and consistently gritty punchlines makes easy work of an aggressive, but overall much less substantive Zay Smoove.

Verdict: Bill Collector (W) 1-0

Favorite line: Bill Collector – “See, I’m just rolling pass the bases I’m a ground ball, all them people riding with you?, that’s a clown car!”

Ty Law and Zay Smoove [DEBATABLE]

Recap: Ty Law and Zay Smoove battle in this rare 3-rounder from Gates of the Garden. Competitive throughout, despite being out-punched Law’s opening freestyles forces a draw to round one, while too many dry spots along with a couple of slip-ups, give a more consistent and (“Put the knife all in him, bring it back out, put it back in, shit look like I’m at the credit card machine, but the chip just won’t work!”) aggressive Zay the 2nd. Behind going into the 3rd, Law gets back on his grind with his best round what with rapid punches that steadily hit. And despite another solid turn from Zay, Law’s more heavy-handed turn makes this one even in the end.

Verdict: TIE

Favorite line: Ty Law – “The fact you got all these battles, not one hot clip, it’s telling like that nigga crying in his mugshot pic!”
